In 1983, Martin Cooper, the inventor of the first handheld cellphone, revolutionized the way we communicate. Now, almost 40 years later, Cooper has seen the development of the technology he created, both the good and the bad. Recently, he spoke to the Portland Press Herald about the state of the technology and what the future may hold.

Cooper said that he is proud of the technology he created, but he also recognizes that it has had a negative impact on society: “The fact is that the cellphone has had a huge impact, and not all of it has been good. It’s had a huge effect on our culture, our behavior and our relationships.”

He also noted that the technology has had a huge impact on our physical health: “I think it’s had a huge effect on our physical health, and it’s had a huge effect on how we interact with each other. We’re all so connected now, but we’re not necessarily connecting in a meaningful way. We’re so busy staring at our screens that we’re not taking the time to actually engage with each other.”

However, Cooper also sees the good that has come from the technology he helped create. He believes that the technology has opened up many new opportunities, both professionally and personally: “Cellphones have also enabled us to do things that we never could before. We can now use them to access information quickly, to connect with people all over the world, and to do business more efficiently. And, of course, they’ve enabled us to stay in touch with our friends and family in ways that we never could before.”

Cooper also believes that the technology is only going to get better, and that it will eventually be used to solve some of the world’s biggest problems: “I think that we’re only just beginning to see the potential of this technology. We’re just starting to understand how it can be used to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, from climate change to poverty. It’s an exciting time, and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.”

Ultimately, Cooper believes that the technology he helped create has had both positive and negative impacts. He is optimistic about the future of the technology, but he also recognizes that it has had a profound effect on our lives and that we must use it responsibly. As he said to the Press Herald, “We have to be mindful of how we use this technology, because it has the potential to be both a blessing and a curse.”
